Our Standards
Rigorous, Evidence-Informed Practice
Adelaide Narrative Therapy Collective holds a deep commitment to reflective and critical practice. We take seriously our responsibility to clients, families, and the legal and professional contexts in which we work.
Our practitioners regularly consult qualitative and quantitative social science research as it bears on the complex matters brought before us — matters that are sometimes tested under cross-examination and subject to rigorous legal scrutiny. This is not about comparing therapeutic modalities, which we find a largely unhelpful frame.
Instead, we engage with the broader body of social science research that illuminates the phenomena at the heart of our work: how families form and fracture, how violence and coercive control operate, how cohesion and disunity unfold across relationships, generations, and societies. We investigate and mark how the carefully chosen ethical values of respect, safety, fairness, accountability, and responsibility are lived and understood across diverse communities.
We are professional, serious, and accountable in our work. Our clients deserve nothing less.
Our Beginnings
The Origin Story
Adelaide Narrative Therapy Collective grew from a shared conviction: that the stories we carry about ourselves are never the whole story. Founded on Kaurna Country, the Collective brought together therapists who had each, in their own way, been shaped by the belief that people are the experts of their own lives.
What began as informal conversations between practitioners — about ethics, accountability, and what it means to be truly helpful — grew into a community of practice. A place where narrative therapy was not just a method, but a way of being in relationship with people.
Each therapist in our collective arrived here by a different road. Some came through family law, some through community work, others through their own experiences of being heard — or not heard — in the rooms where it mattered most. Together, they formed something rarer than a practice: a genuine collective.

Please ask your Home Care package service provider for counselling services with Adelaide Narrative Therapy.
- •Home Care Packages (HCP) / Support at Home: Counselling is considered a "care and support" service that can be funded through a Home Care Package (levels 1–4). The cost is deducted from your package budget, which is subsidised by the government.
- •Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP): For lower-level, short-term support, CHSP providers charge a client contribution fee, which is generally much lower than the full cost of the service.
- •Residential Aged Care: Counselling services within a residential facility are sometimes included in the standard daily care fee or can be part of extra services, depending on the provider.
Mental Health Medicare Rebates
Mental Health Medicare Rebates may be available with select therapists for clients with a referral from a GP about Clinical Mental Health concerns only.
Important Notice
Medicare Better Health Rebates cannot apply to payment for counselling on referral from lawyers or on court order, as these pertain to family separation and legal matters. Medicare rebates also do not apply to couples, relationship, or family therapy.
Undoubtably, family and relationship conflict and breakdown affects everyone's mental health. Adelaide Narrative Counsellors will respond to these concerns within the context of the relationship, family, parenting, and legal factors.
Our Counsellors are registered with their Professional Associations, meaning they are accountable to a Code of Conduct and our clients have independent processes for feedback and concerns.
